In this video, released on CHOW.com in 2009, tea author James Norwood Pratt muses about tea. He comes across as a kind old gentleman in a brown leather chair, and has some cleverly quotable moments:

On learning about tea:
“The same way I would tell someone to start learning about lovemaking…”

On tea bags:
“Of course I use tea bags…it is the first line of self-defense…”

  1. Terrific video! In a short 9 minutes, he touches on many of the essentials. Great primer for any apsiring tea connoisseur.

It's interesting to see his brewing gear – far from pristine, tanned and stained from what would apparently be years of use.

  2. I also like seeing his teapot and tea equipment. It is a lot different than what is often seen in videos of tea. We've gotten so used to seeing pristine and elegant teaware that seeing ol' Pratt's well-used teapot with an ordinary tea cozy is rather cool.

  3. I love this guy and I adore his book. True authority on #tea.
